Useful information about the place and its history
The area around Altdöbern has been proven to have been occupied since the Neolithic. Over the course of time, the Lusitzi, coming from the north, settled in the area. The oldest official mention of Altdöbern can, however, only be found in a document from 13th November 1285. The name is Slavonic and means village in the ground or village in the valley. In the year 1571, Hans von Dieskau arranged for a manor house with tower in the Renaissance style to be built. That was the foundation for Altdöbern Castle, which still stands today.
One of the largest inland lakes in the state of Brandenburg is being created in the former Greifenhain mine - Lake Altdöbern. External flooding with treated mine water started in the year 1998. When the final water level is reached in the year 2021, Lake Altdöbern will hold around 330 million cubic metres of water. More than 1000 hectares of water area will then also be available for tourism uses. Interesting concepts are expected to be implemented. For example, there are plans for a ferry link between Pritzen and Altdöbern.
However, holidaymakers and local residents can already get active by Lake Altdöbern. The concrete cycle path along the south bank offers cyclists, skaters and pedestrians some interesting views over the lake.
