Bärwalder See is not only Saxony’s largest water body, but also offers plenty of leisure activities. A 14.3 mile (23 km) long circular tarmacked path runs immediately around it. All attractions and sights along the lake are accessible from this fully tarmacked path.
The Klitten lakefront is something special with its panoramic view across the lake and the impressive silhouette of the Boxberg power plant. Equally impressive is the harbour with its landmark, the red and white lighthouse, the first in the entire Lusatian Lake District. It was inaugurated in late summer in 2011.
No wonder that water sports enthusiasts feel so much at home at the Klitten lakefront. The Klitten harbour equally welcomes beginners wishing to learn the art of sailing and experienced sailors, who want to rent a boat. Piers in Klitten, Uhyst/Spree and Boxberg/O.L. provide optimal conditions for passenger cruises.
The Klitten beach also welcomes bathers. The shoreline gradually descends into the water, offering ideal conditions for families with children. Visitors wishing to stay longer find comfortable accommodation on the Klitten camping ground. More information about the lake and potential activities is available at www.baerwalder-see.eu.
The Klitten church was documented for the first time in 1346. The village nearly fell prey to the Bärwalde opencast mine towards the end of the 20th century. Yet the political turnover in 1989/1990 and the protests of the inhabitants combined to save the village. Today, Klitten is very closely tied to the development of Bärwalder See. Its two churches (Protestant and Old Lutheran) and the gateway buildings of the former manor in the neighbouring village of Jahmen are well worth a visit.
