In future, the Lusatian Lake District will feature a total of 13 so-called Überleiter, that is, navigable canals. Several are already usable. The first to be commissioned was Koschener Kanal in 2013, connecting Senftenberger See with Geierswalder See. In most cases, these canals are not only used for tourism, but are also important for water management. They allow for the draining of water from individual lakes to feed it into others.
Überleiter 7 will be built just over 0.6 miles (1 km) north of the village of Klein Partwitz and connects Partwitzer See and Blunoer Südsee. Überleiter 7 will not have any actual water management function, but will be all the more important for tourism, as it will provide a short-cut from the heart of the chain of lakes to the neighbouring Spreetal lakes.
The State Ministry for Economics of the Federal State of Saxony estimates the construction costs at about ten million euros. The regional population and tourists are not the only ones who are well aware that this investment is guaranteed to be worthwhile. Überleiter 7 is regarded as an identity-establishing structure of essential importance for tourism and the inhabitants of Klein Partwitz, who then would live on a sort of island, surrounded by the canals Überleiter 6 and 7 as well as the immediately adjacent lakes. There is no second real ‘island village’ in the Lusatian Lake District.
