Geierswalde has a lot to offer to visitors. In the village itself, a trip to the church as well as to the memorial commemorating the village of Scado, that is directly uphill of the floating houses, are well worth a visit. Scado had to make way for the Koschen opencast mine, today’s Geierswalder See, in the mid-1960s. The memorial includes several displays with plenty of information on the region.
At the lake itself, a host of activities await holiday-makers, ranging from the bathing beach and various water sports, including water ski, to leisurely boat trips. The passenger cruise ‘Aqua Phoenix’ stops at the pier next to the beach during the season.
Several pubs and takeaways in Geierswalde provide a welcome break. They offer good home cooking. The lighthouse, a striking hotel and catering complex, is located directly on the southern shore of the lake between Geierswalde and Tätzschwitz.
Cyclists and skaters get their money’s worth in and around Geierswalde on many miles of well-developed cycle trails. For instance, they can circumnavigate Geierswalder See. While doing so, they pass the lake district’s landmark, the 98 foot (30 m) high lookout tower ‘Rostiger Nagel’ (Rusty Nail). The lake district art project by the Léon-Focault-Gymnasium, a grammar school in Hoyerswerda, attracts visitors on Koschendamm, a dam near Barbarakanal.
Visitors arriving in the lake district by public transport can use the bicycle bus that drives to the most important destinations, including Geierswalde, on weekends during the warm season.
