Useful information about the place and its history
The place was first mentioned in a document in 1408. The name Grosen Koscho was mentioned in a document issued on 14th May 1461. The name developed from Grosse Koschin in the year 1474 to the name we know today.
The town of Großkoschen lies at the foot of Koschenberg. On the south side of the mountain, vines were cultivated on a large scale up until 1928. The farmers were very proud to be vineyard owners. Grapes no longer grow on the slopes of Koschenberg. The company Basalt AG now operates a quarry on the mountain. A very pure greywacke has already been quarried for over 100 years.
Mining shaped the lives of Großkoschen's inhabitants for many years. Traditional buildings such as the Hammermühle and Dorfmühle fell victim to mining. After the last coal train left Niemtsch mine in 1966, flooding of the pit commenced and it was redesigned to create the Lake Senftenberg we know today.
The first section of sandy beach in Großkoschen was inaugurated on 1st June 1973.
Today, Großkoschen is mainly known as a tourist spot. Alongside larger holiday parks, such as the “Familienpark”, there are also numerous private providers of holiday bungalows and rooms.
