Hoyerswerda has lots to offer. In the Old Town, the palace with city museum beckons. On two floors, visitors are introduced to the centuries-old history of Hoyerswerda. In addition, the Jürgen-von-Woyski-Exhibition presents the life and works of the Hoyerswerda sculptor and painter. The zoo is directly next to the palace. Some 100 animal species are kept here on nearly 15 acres (6 hectares). The zoo is known for its otter breeding and research centre, which sets it apart from a traditional zoo. Visitors can embark on a little tour around the world as the zoo is home to animals from all continents.
Also well worth a visit is the market square in the Old Town with the historical town hall and the Saxon milepost. The landmark building in Kirchstraße (Church Street) is the Johanneskirche that is open to visitors every day from 11 am to 5 pm. Nearby, the Lange Straße (Long Street) invites explorers to immerse themselves in the life of the once so important guild of craftsmen of Hoyerswerda. Ancient neat houses and the historical cobbles create a very special atmosphere. By contrast, the ‘Kulturfabrik’, short ‘KuFa’, in Braugasse provides cultural entertainment. Exhibitions, theatre, cinema and much more await visitors.
In the New Town, a visit to Lausitzer Platz is a must. The Lausitz-Center, a shopping centre, the Lausitzhalle cultural centre with its wide range of events and the adjacent park are all well worth a visit. In addition, the Zuse-Computer-Museum in Dietrich-Bonhoeffer-Straße with its exhibition on the life and works of the inventor of the computer and the history of IT awaits technically interested visitors. Konrad Zuse spent his early years in Hoyerswerda. Another attraction is the Lausitzbad with its exciting range of pools and facilities.
