Hoyerswerda has many sights on offer for tourists. Which other town in the region boasts two centres, the Old Town and the New Town? The historical Old Town centres around the market square with town hall and Saxon milepost. The nearby palace houses the museum, where on two floors visitors can explore the town’s history.
The zoo is immediately adjacent to the palace. Some 100 animal species turn a visit into a journey around the world. Other sights in the Old Town include the Johanniskirche church, the so-called ‘Handwerkergasse’ (craftsmen’s lane) of Lange Straße, the Lessinghaus and the Gesellschaftshaus, where the Sorbian umbrella organisation ‘Domowina’ was established in 1912.
Lausitzer Platz is the central square of the New Town. The Lausitz-Center shopping mall with its nearly 60 shops is ideal for some window shopping. The neighbouring Lausitzhalle is the cultural centre and numerous well-known artists have performed at this venue. The newly established Zuse Computer Museum in Dietrich-Bonhoeffer-Straße is dedicated to the history of computing including the latest applications and the inventor of the first computer, Konrad Zuse. Zuse spent his youth in Hoyerswerda. The New Town with its parks is green, full of flowers and art.
Hoyerswerda moreover boasts the exciting Lausitzbad pool complex, the Gondelteich boating lake, a cinema, the Kulturfabrik (KuFa) cultural centre and several cycle trails providing fast access to the nearby lake district.
The pub ‘Zum Adler’ on the boundary between Hoyerswerda and its district of Dörgenhausen offers traditional Saxon cuisine. All dishes are prepared with love and care. The pub is also an ideal starting point for exploring Hoyerswerda and for tours to the post mill in Dörgenhausen and to the Dubringer Moor.
