Useful information about the place and its history
Peickwitz was mentioned for the first time in 1455 as Pykicz. The village was designed with streets built around a village green and, just like most places in the area, was primarily inhabited by Sorbs. From 1622 up until the end of the 19th Century, Peickwitz was an outlying estate of Hohenbocka Manor. With the start of industrialisation, the mostly agricultural village gradually became a community for industrial workers. The mining of glass sand in Hosena and Hohenbocka, the glassworks and the mine meant that living conditions changed.
Agriculture became increasingly important again after 1945, and so the largest milk production plant in the Senftenberg district resulted in 1981. Alongside livestock farming, crops and biogas production have become sources of income for agricultural companies.
The potential for tourism should be developed even more with the continuing expansion of cycle and hiking paths, the establishment of holiday apartments and the availability of nature conservation areas. One thing popular with tourists and mushroom pickers is the cycle and hiking path network, which leads into the surrounding forest areas and the “Peickwitz Ponds” nature conservation area.
